Morris J. Amitay is a prominent Washington, D.C. attorney, the former Executive Director of AIPAC--the American Israel Political Action Committee--and the founder of Washington PAC, another pro-Israel political action committee. In this column published at JTA, he endorses John McCain based on Senator McCain's foreign policy experience and views.

Mr Amitay, the suggestion that I and other supporters of Peace Now are somehow inferior Jews is a truly shocking assertion. I have long noted, unfortunately, that such rhetoric comes from individuals who tend to hold their siddurim upside down with their thumb or finger in a place that the cantor left behind 15 minutes previously. I suggest strongly, sir, that you learn to be civil and engaging.

Shabbat shalom.

Kindest,

Rabbi Arie Chark

Dear Rabbi Chark:
I have read and re-read Mr. Amitay's column, linked in this post, and on which you commented. There is nothing in Mr. Amitay's column to justify your claim that he suggested that you and other supporters of Peace Now are "somehow inferior Jews." I would suggest, Rabbi, that it is not Mr. Amitay's column that is a "truly shocking assertion," but rather your unjustified ad hominem attack on someone whose long efforts on behalf of Israel and the Jewish community merit more respect than you exhibited. Mr. Amitay does challenge the views of those American Jews--indeed the vast majority of American Jews--who backed Barack Obama over John McCain in the recent election. Political disagreement is hardly the same as suggesting that such persons are "inferior Jews." I truly hope that you revisit this blog and read this comment.
