Happy Independence Day

A reminder for us all of what the day means:

You can find a nice readable copy of the Declaration of Independence here.

John Adams said he hoped future generations would read it aloud every Fourth of July. We've been doing that, and once the kids got used to the archaic usage and spelling, it became a fun tradition. Try it!

Print out a few copies and leave them around during your barbecues. It'll help people remember why we celebrate the day.

My first reaction to Anonymous Comment No. 1 was to delete it, because the Huffington Post column by Bob Cesca to which it links bears no relation to Lowell's post. However, I decided in the end to keep it, because it so well illustrates the lack of class and the antipathy to love of our country and support of our troops that so exemplify the current American political Left. Lowell posted a politically neutral, absolutely non-partisan article about the sacrifices that our armed forces continue to make to protect our liberty, and he urged parents to read the Declaration of Independence to their children. Anonymous 1 reacts by linking to yet another toxic, hate-filled anti-Bush diatribe. Real classy, fellow, really classy.
