The Return of the Peace Democrats
Martin Peretz, Editor of The New Republic, writes in the Wall Street Journal that the emergence of Ned Lamont as the favorite over incumbent Senator Joe Lieberman in the Connecticut Democratic primary election is "Karl Rove's dream come true." He opines that the Democratic Party may be returning to 1972, when it chose the otherwise undistinguished Senator George McGovern as its Presidential nominee, essentially on a one-issue anti-Vietnam war platform, thereby assuring a massive landslide victory by Republican President Richard Nixon. He concludes that if this trend holds, it will doom the Democrats' political future. He is right on all counts.
