Presidential Politics, Mitt Romney, Tar Babies, and Marriage and Divorce

All those subjects are (somewhat ambitiously) covered at Article 6 Blog today. Read this post and then this post. (I am one of the co-authors of that blog, so please excuse my shameless self-promotion.)

This seems clearly to be an attempt to smear Gov. Romney by his opponents in Massachusetts, as the biggest "traction" this is getting (despite the post on Drudge and CNN) is coming out of the Boston papers.

Even if "tar baby" may be used derogatorily against black people in some parts of the country (and may have a somewhat pejorative connotation when used within that community itself), it is nothing more than shameless demogoguery to suggest that Mitt used it that way--particularly when it was clearly used in a well-accepted sense--derived from the Uncle Remus stories--in reference to an issue, and not to any person.

Jack Dunphy 's comments in today's National Review Online about the Mel Gibson debacle--a sorry spectacle, indeed--are not totally without some applicability here:

"Things have reached a pretty pass when reports of a celebrity’s drunken misbehavior and anti-Semitic rants are treated as bigger news than an actual war in Israel. But there you have it, life in America in 2006 . . ."

Life in America in 2006, indeed.
