LA Times: Giuliani Enjoys Wide Support Among Evangelicals
A front-page feature story in today's Los Angeles Times describes the surprising support for Rudy Giuliani among conservative Evangelical Christians, despite his liberal positions on social issues such as abortion, gun control and gay rights. Is the Times' article correct? If so, why would a candidate such as Mitt Romney, with strong socially conservative positions, and a life that reflects his pro-family values, lack appeal among Christian conservatives? Do conservative evangelical Christians prefer a lapsed Catholic to a Mormon in good standing? I want to hear the views of Hedgehog readers on this question, and I am sure Lowell will want your views on the Article VI Blog.

Who knows, and who cares? The less said about the candidates' religious affiliation and practice the better ... the more Romney's supporters make an issue of his Mormon religion, the more offputting it is to the general electorate. Hugh Hewitt is a perfect example ... he wrote and is now flogging a book entitled "Mormon in the White House" and then he shouts "bigot!" at everybody else who dares note that Romney's Mormonism might be a campaign negative. If evangelical Christians, or Buddhists or Wiccans prefer Giuliani over Romney, it probably has little or nothing to do with the candidates' respective religions, one way or another. Romney's supporters need to focus on the secular issues that voters really care about - else they will seem to be carrying a large chip on their collective shoulder that hurts their own guy.
I'm an Evangelical Christian, currently supporting Romney, but if Fred Thompson jumped in the ring, I'd straddle the fence between him and Romney until I saw them in a debate or other decisive venue.
That said, name recognition is huge. Out here in California, everyone has heard of Giuliani, and only a few have heard of Romney. Most of my church friends have almost no idea who all the players are in the presidential race, and they care even less. They'll start paying attention when they need to, probably in the last few weeks before the primary. And then a few of them will ask me who I'm voting for, to help them decide--because they know I pay attention.
I wouldn't get my knickers in a bunch over who will or won't support whom right now. At this point in the election cycle, most people just don't care.
I'm a conservative Christian (not Evangelical), and I don't much like Romney. The guy strikes me as phony, kind of a republican Evan Bayh. To me he comes across as all scripted image; I worry that I don't know here his heart really is. I prefer a 'what you see is what you get' kind of guy. Maybe my impression is all wrong, but that is how I feel. Mark G
