Richard Armitage And His Eternal Reward

Jed Babbin has some thoughts on just where Armitage will end up. Hint: It's balmy there.

Babbin has yet to explain just what Armitage and Powell had to do with the appointment of a special prosecutor after Armitage went to the FBI. Or how they were responsible for Fitzgerald's conuct as special prosecutor.

Jed Babbin's petty score-settling deos not impress me very much. If anything, it only makes things worse, because the longer the internecine food fight goes on, the more likely it is that Fitzgerald's going to get off scot-free.

Am I the only person who seems to see some messed-up priorities here?

For the record, I have criticized Powell's position on the military tribunals legislation on my blog. Also, I have, in the past, been critical of Powell's decision to designate the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia as a terrorist organization.

Harold, lest you think that everyone is blaming only Armitage and Powell, here's an interesting letter from one Clarice Feldman to the DOJ Office of Professional Responsibility calling for an investigation of Mr. Fitzgerald's conduct.

I find it a bit strange to use a magazine article (especially from a clearly partisan source, The Weekly Standard), but it's clear there are some people unwilling to let Fitzgerald off the hook.

For what it's worth, Babbin's gripe about Armitage and Powell is not that they are totally at fault here. Rather, it is that they remained silent even as an investigation which they knew was based on factual error, which they also knew the special prosecutor knew, dragged on and aimed at others in the administration, became political fodder for vitriolic attacks on the administration based almost entirely on the false premise they uniquely knew to be false, and even resulted in an indictment of another official.

From my view they deserve the opprobrium.
