It Is The Soldier

Frequent guest blogger and honorary Hedgehog Ralph Kostant directed me to A Different River, where this poem appears:

IT IS THE SOLDIER

By Charles M. Province

It is the soldier, not the reporter
Who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the soldier, not the poet
Who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the soldier, not the campus organizer
Who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.
It is the soldier, not the lawyer

Who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the soldier
Who salutes the flag,
Who serves under the flag,
Whose coffin is draped in the flag,
Who allows the protester to burn the flag.

It is the reporter, not the soldier, Who records the crimes of government.
It is the poet, not the soldier, Who gives us the words to sing and shout.
It is the organizer, not the soldier, Who stands defenseless in front of tyrants.
It is the defender of the justice, Who needs no flag, Who serves the people,
And Who needs no coffin. Who forgives the soldier who nails him to the cross.
