I am the father of two able-bodied sons. I have never experienced the feelings Frank Schaeffer describes in this L.A. Times op-ed piece, and although I hope I never have to, I am willing to take them on. All that said, I think I comprehend his feelings just a little. Such imaginings are fitting for Memorial Day, I think.

--John Adams, 'Argument in Defense of the Soldiers in the Boston Massacre Trials,' December 1770.
