Did Danny Pearl Die In Vain?

This week marks the seventh anniversary of the murder of kidnapped Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl. He was abducted and killed in Pakistan by Al Qaeda. The photo at right was taken by his merciless captors just prior to his slaying. In a moving column in today's Wall Street Journal Opinion Journal online, entitled "Daniel Pearl and the Normalization of Evil," his father, UCLA Professor Judea Pearl, examines how Western academics, journalists and politicians, especially former President Jimmy Carter, have "defined deviation down," in the words of the late Senator and UN Ambassador Daniel Patrick Moynihan, by legitimizing terror as a legitimate political tactic.
