An Emerging 2008 Front-Runner for the GOP, If It Weren't for His Religion?
John McIntyre of Real Clear Politics thinks Massachusett Governor Mitt Romney would "almost certainly" be the "clear frontrunner" for the GOP nomination "if the Mormon issue wasn't floating around in the background."
I've posted some thoughts on this at Article 6 Blog.

I wish Mr. McIntyre had explained more fully his view of why Romney's Mormonism may be an impediment.
I haven't read RCP Blog enough to know which horse, if any, Mr. McIntyre may have his own money on. But some over at Real Clear Politics seem to be clearly in the Gingrich camp, and therefore have a reason to articulate reasons why anyone else, and particularly an "otherwise" frontrunner, might not be the best horse in the race.
At least at this early date in the campaign, it seems that the Mormon "issue" gets brought up most consistently by (1) the Boston Globe, which just can't seem to leave it alone, (2) people who seem to be supporting other candidates, and finally, (3) other political commentators who need something to write about (some of whom might just be Romney supporters hoping to flog this issue to death early so it doesn't become a bigger issue later--KLo at National Review's The Corner comes to mind here in my own speculations).
Of course, we can only imagine what the Democrats might do if Romney were actually to win the nomination--and that doesn't look pretty given past history (Kennedy-Romney in 1994, for example).

Do any of you guys know how Romney is on the War issue? Did he support Israel in their fight against Hezbollah? Was he opposed to the stupid cease-fire that's going to get more Israelis (and probably Americans) killed?
I still prefer Romney at this point, from what I've read about him, but the War on Islamofascism is the looming unanswered question for me.

Here's a Boston Globe article reporting on Romney's MSNBC appearance in which the war on terrorism was at least a topic of discussion. Sounds like Romney's on the "right side" although it's hard to judge a governor on foreign policy issues, particularly ones that know their job doesn't usually include that sphere.
