Factoid of the Week

"A majority of teachers, parents and students at Jefferson Elementary School in Berkeley favored renaming the school Sequoia Elementary because Jefferson owned hundreds of slaves. Under Chief Sequoia, the Cherokee nation owned more than 1,500 black slaves."

--George F. Will in Newsweek.

I lived near Berkeley for most of a decade. Actually my home was in Fremont in the East Bay— less "tony" but having one of the most diverse populations of any place I've lived, excepting possibly the city of Chicago. Berkeley residents repeatedly proclaim themselves to be the most tolerant and friendly folks to be found on the planet. I found this to be absolutely true, until you expressed an opinion different from theirs. Then, God help you.

Idiotic acts such as you note here, following from their obsession with reckless, heedless, un-researched, smug, doctrinaire posturing, will be their enduring monument.
